There Are No Vegan Sources Of VITAMIN B12 !!!

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Yes, you read it right. Vitamin B12 has gained attention of the doctors and the population in general since last few years. And there are some concrete reasons to it. First things first, Vitamin B12 is an essential element for the synthesis of myelin layers over the nerves!! The words here are BOUNCERS .. right? Lets make it simple!

Role Of Vitamin B12 in Humans!

We have a dense network of nerves in our body. But the bigger nerves, especially, have to be built different. Reasons-

1) They need to conduct impulses faster.

2) They should not conduct unnecessary impulses.

3) They must conduct the relevant impulses

AND, for this purpose bigger nerves are wrapped with 'special protective coating' called

Myelin Sheaths!

VITAMIN B12 IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR THE FORMATION OF THIS MYELIN SHEATHS!!

What happens if the nerves don't have this "Special Protective Coating" ??

Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency and consequences of absence of this Special Protective coatings are the same!!

1) Tingling and numbness especially over feet

2) The very typical "pins and needles sensation". 3) Irritability

4) Generalized Weakness and uneasiness

5) Low Hemoglobin

Now Lets Get Into The Reasons Of Why Vitamin B12 Deficiency Is Getting More and More Common??

Sources Of Vitamin B12 are Limited! (bad luck for vegans)

To our surprise there are no proven vegan sources of vitamin b12, So if we go by nature's laws. Nature was aware of this thing, and so it made stores of Vitamin B12 in liver. Yes , Vitamin B12 is the only vitamin in the b complex group that has got stores in the liver.

Probably because the dietary sources of

vitamin B12 were limited and that would be known to our physiological systems

through centuries of evolution.

I have been seeing cases of Vitamin B12

deficiencies more frequently than ever,

probably because the testing for these vitamins are also rising but more so, because of the limited sources of B12.

But then the question here is

Why back then vitamin B12 deficiencies were not so common??

The answer should be, there should be something apart from diet that is interfering in the B12 metabolism! and that something, most probably is the WATER you are drinking! Isn't it shocking??!! Yes but its true!

A BONUS FACT- bit out of track, But IMPORTANT!

The RO based water we are having since few years is found to Interfere with B12 absorption from intestines!! Several studies have supported this and this can be proved logically too!

Simply because absorption of Vitamin B12 from intestine is a complex process and it requires a specific pH and electrolytes along with intrinsic factor secreted from stomach to get absorbed from intestine and reach your blood stream! and... RO based water interferes by kicking off the required electrolytes for B12 absorption!

coming back to our point!!

Why vegans lack B12 ??

As we have already started to feel why B12 is a "CELEBRITY" in its own world! Celebs should be rare to find and tough to catch.. and you cant find them everywhere.. plus they are needed for some important events! Here in your body- for conduction of nerve impulses! Pretty much looks like it is important event! And the problem for B12 is its found in its natural form only through animal sources. We practically don't have any vegan sources of B12 !! Sad but true! However there are fortified vegan food that contains handsome amount of B12 but then its FORTIFIED and Not NATURAL!

So don't fall into the myths of getting B12 stores replaced with Green vegetables and fruits! It is not going to work.

AND, AND, AND... This piece of information is coming from and MD, (Medicine) , who himself is a staunch vegetarian! So we are not endorsing non vegan foods here! Just spitting out facts!
